Answer

Hi there,

Thank you very much for contacting Ask Alex. We are delighted you are trusting us with your question.

You are asking what to you do if a parent is verbally abusive and threatening?

No one has a right to cause any child or person any sort of physical, or emotional harm. If you are experiencing verbal abuse and threats from your parents, here are some things you can do:

  • If you are in immediate danger, you can contact the Gardaí on 999 or 112.
  • Talk to someone you trust, such as a friend’s parent, a teacher, or another family member about the situation; they might be able to provide you with emotional support and guidance. They may also be able to get you some professional help like counselling should you need it.
  • If you need someone else to talk to, Childline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The service is non-judgmental, confidential, and free to contact. Childline can support you, and if needs be, Childline can contact the Gardaí or Túsla for you, but only after we have chatted and you give us identifying information about you.

You may find this article helpful, it’s from the Childline website www.childline.ie/what-is-abuse/. This is another www.childline.ie/how-to-live-with-a-parent-who-has-anger-issues/.
