Hello Alex every day in school I get brutally bullied for my really long hair ( I’m a boy) and some teachers even tell me to cut it short . I like my long hair but I think I should get it cut short because of the bullying but my mom would kill me if I cut it short what should I do. Thank you

Answer

Hi there,

Thanks so much for getting in touch. We are glad you reached out as it takes a lot of courage to open up about your situation and brutal bullying. It sounds like you’re experiencing some conflicting views, and it’s okay to feel a bit stuck on decision-making in the midst of it all.

We are sorry to hear that even though you like to keep your hair long, you think you should get it cut as a result of others’ opinions and bullying. Your feelings are valid, and your hair is a significant part of your identity. Whatever the length and style, hair plays an important role in how we choose to define and express ourselves.

We want you to know what you are going through is valid. Have you spoken to a friend or trusted adult about what is going on for you? Talking things through with someone neutral can help us feel better and see a clearer picture of what is going on, so that you don’t go through these big feelings alone. You might also consider talking to a school counsellor or teacher about the bullying—they can offer support and help address the situation. Additionally, it’s important to prioritise your mental and emotional well-being over others’ opinions. Coping mechanisms, such as practicing self-care activities or finding a creative outlet, can also help you through this challenging time.
