How to stop overthinking

Your Question

How do I deal with overthinking?

Answer

Hey there, welcome to Ask Alex!

First of all,  we want to say that we’re really glad you reached out about this. Overthinking can be tough, and it’s something a lot of us deal with, so you’re definitely not alone in feeling this way.

It’s important to know that it’s okay to have thoughts racing through your mind, but it’s also important to find ways to cope with them when they become overwhelming. One thing you can try is to practice mindfulness or meditation. These techniques can help you focus on the present moment and calm your mind when it starts to spiral with too many thoughts. Another strategy is to talk about your feelings with someone you trust. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or even a counsellor, sharing what’s on your mind can help lighten the burden and provide new perspectives on whatever you’re overthinking.

Lastly, try to challenge those negative thoughts. Ask yourself if there’s evidence to support them, or if they’re just assumptions. Sometimes our minds can create worst-case scenarios that aren’t based in reality, so it’s important to challenge those thoughts and replace them with more positive ones.

Remember, it’s ok to ask for help when you need it. Whether it’s from friends, family, or professionals, support is out there for you.
