Alex's Answer

Why don't my parents understand me

Your Question

Why my parents are not understanding me?

Answer

Hi there,

Thanks so much for your question and reaching out to us here at Ask Alex.

It sounds like you feel your parents are not getting you at the moment. That can be a really difficult experience as it can feel quite isolating.

You have the right to feel listened to and heard. It is important that you have a trusted adult in your life that you can turn to if you need to talk about things. It is important that they try and understand your point of view and that they can listen to you without judging you.

We wonder have you spoken to your parents about how you are feeling? Perhaps, it might be useful to tell them that you don’t think they are understanding you. Perhaps you have tried this already and it has not been useful. If this is the case, it might be beneficial to talk to another trusted adult in your life that you feel would be there to support you.

It is important to remember that you are not alone in this. There are lots of support services that can help you at this time and whatever you are going through. Jigsaw offer a range of different support services and you can find out more about how to access them at www.jigsaw.ie.

You would also be very welcome to contact us here in Childline.  You can phone us on 1800 66 66 66 or through our Live Chat on www.childline.ie.  Childline services are free and confidential, and are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

We hope that things work out for you and that you get the support and understanding that you need.

Remember, you don’t have to go through anything on your own. Take care of yourself,

Alex
