Answer

Hi you are very welcome to Ask Pat.

From what you are saying you want to know about when teenage mood swings stop and depression begins. Would I be right in thinking that you feel teenage mood swings are replaced by depression?

Teenage years can be difficult for some people and for others they are ok. It sounds like you are aware of your feelings but just need some clarification.  It is important that you get the correct information about mood swings and depression. You have the right to talk to someone and get the answers that you need. Talking to someone about your concerns and feelings and what you are experiencing can help you to understand what is going on. You may also need to see a medical professional like a doctor or a counsellor, who can tell you if you do indeed have depression. They will be able to give you the medical and emotional support that you are entitled to.

This is a website which you can look up www.yourmentalhealth.ie. It gives lots of information on common health issues such as depression. The Childline website also has an Information and Advice section ‘ About Me’ www.childline.ie/about-me/ which may help you understand some more why you might be feeling the way that you are.

Contacting Childline is another option for you. Childline is available 24/7 and is here to listen to you and chat about what is going on for you. We are not going to judge what you say or tell you what to do. We can help you to explore what supports are available to you. It is a safe, confidential place for you to chat. You can contact us via our telephone service 1800 66 66 66 or our text service 50101. Another way to get in touch with us is by web chat through our website www.childline.ie.

You have been very brave in reaching out to us and looking for advice. I hope that you found some of the information helpful. We really would love to chat more about how you are feeling. You have our details and are welcome to call or drop us a message any time.

Mind yourself and take care,
