Welcome to Ask Alex,

It’s very brave of you to contact us as we know it’s not always easy for young people to talk about aggression and violent behaviour, especially when it is being carried out by themselves. It is great that you are being proactive and trying to change this behaviour.

Anger is one of the basic human emotions, along with happiness, sadness, anxiety, or disgust. These emotions are tied to basic survival and developed over the course of human history. Anger is related to the “fight, flight, or freeze” response of the nervous system; it prepares humans to fight. Anger can often happen to mask other emotions, such as shame, fear, or guilt. It is important to acknowledge the feeling without letting it take over and making you lose control. Some strategies for anger management include regular exercise, learning relaxation techniques and counselling.
