Answer

Hi there! Thanks for your question.

You are asking for guidance on how to come out to your traditional-Catholic and Conservative parents.

It takes a lot of courage to reach out and ask for help, especially about something as personal as coming out. You’re incredibly brave for being true to yourself, even in the face of uncertainty. We want you to know that you’re not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to support you every step of the way.

Having conversations about your identity with Conservative and trad-Catholic parents can be challenging, but it’s important to remember that your safety and well-being come first. One resource we highly recommend is BeLonGTo, an organisation dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ young people in Ireland. They offer a range of resources, including guidance on coming out and dealing with family reactions www.belongto.org/. LGBT is another organisation which can offer you support lgbt.ie/our-services/.

It’s essential to approach this conversation with care and consideration for your parents’ beliefs, while also standing up for your own identity. You might find it helpful to have support from another trusted adult, such as a teacher, counsellor, or another family member, who can provide guidance and support during this process. There are a number of articles on the Childline website that may be helpful for you to read www.childline.ie/sexuality-and-relationships/

Remember, you are never alone. If you ever feel overwhelmed or unsure about how to proceed, you can reach out to organisations like Childline for confidential support and guidance. Our team is available 24/7, ready to listen and help you explore your options in a safe and supportive environment. You can contact us by freephone on 1800 66 66 66 or Live Chat with us through Childline.ie.

No matter what, always prioritise your safety and well-being. You have the right to be true to yourself, and there are people and resources out there who will support you every step of the way. Take things at your own pace, and know that you are deserving of love and acceptance just as you are.

Look after yourself and know that ChildLine is here for you if you would like to chat to us anonymously and in confidence before coming out to you parents, or anyone else,
