Period pain

Your Question

why deos my stomach hurt when on my period

Answer

Hey there! Welcome to Ask Alex.

We’re really glad you reached out with this question. Dealing with period pain can be tough, and it’s totally normal to have questions about it.

So, why does your stomach hurt during your period? When your body is shedding the uterine lining during menstruation, it releases chemicals which trigger contractions in the uterus to help it expel the lining. But sometimes, they can also cause cramps in your stomach and lower back. The HSE (the public health and social care service in Ireland) have this article which explains about period pain and how to treat it www2.hse.ie/conditions/period-pain/.

Remember, everyone’s body is different, so what you experience might not be the same as someone else. If your period pain is really bothering you or interfering with your daily life, it’s a good idea to talk to a trusted adult or healthcare provider.

If you ever need someone to talk to about anything, whether it’s period-related or not, Childline is here for you.
