Parents won't understand

Your Question

Should I tell my parents about me wanting help/wanting to get diagnose for adhd/depression? I feel like they won’t understand

Answer

Hi there,

You are very welcome to Ask Alex. Thank you so much for coming on to ask your question.

It sounds like, from what you have said, you think you may need to get a possible diagnosis. ADHD and depression can present differently for different people, and it can be good to get professional medical support to gain a better understanding and the necessary support you might need.

As a young person in Ireland, you do have the right to access support. The first point of contact for this support can be through visiting your GP. Since we are unsure of your age, it might be important to inform your parents so you can access your GP, as you may need their consent if you are under the age of 16 years.

It can be challenging to share our feelings or what’s going on with us with people in our lives. It can be helpful to take some time to consider what we might say to this person and when might be a good time to talk to them.

You are welcome to contact us at Childline if you would like to chat more or even have a space to discuss what you might say to your parents. We will never tell you what to do, but we will explore possible options with you without judgment. It is a safe space for you. You can call us at 1800 66 66 66 or log onto our instant messaging Live Chat service  on www.childline.ie. we are open 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. There will always be someone here to chat or talk with you. You never have to feel alone.
