Answer

Hi there, welcome to Ask Alex.

Firstly, we want to thank you for reaching out and trusting us with your feelings. It takes immense courage to open up about something as personal as self-harm, and we want you to know that you’re not alone in this. Many teenagers struggle with similar emotions, and it’s important to know that there are people who care about you and want to help.

We understand how overwhelming it can feel when you’re struggling with self-harm and worrying about infections. Your health and well-being are of the utmost importance, so it’s crucial to take care of yourself physically as well as emotionally. If you suspect that one of your wounds has become infected, getting medical attention is vital. Infections can worsen if left untreated, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted adult, or a healthcare professional who can help you with proper care and any necessary treatment.

Also, we want to emphasise the importance of getting support for the emotional challenges you’re facing. Talking to someone you trust, whether it’s a family member, a friend, or a counsellor, can provide you with the understanding and guidance you need to cope with your feelings in healthier ways. You don’t have to go through this alone, and there are people who want to listen and support you without judgment. Pieta.ie is an organisation who specialise in supporting people who self-harm. They have a 24-hour phone service (1800 247 247), and a text service (text HELP to 51444).

Remember, you deserve to feel safe and supported, and there are resources available to help you through this difficult time. If you ever need someone to talk to, you can always contact Childline by freephone at 1800 66 66 66 or through Live Chat at www.childline.ie. Our services are confidential, non-judgmental, and open 24/7. Whether it’s for any reason, at any time, we’re here for you.

Take care of yourself, and know that you are valued and worthy of support and care. Warm regards,

Alex
