Hi Pat, my parents have never been there for me and I don’t feel like they are family, my brothers are more of parents to me and I don’t know how to feel like my parents are my parents again.

Answer

Hi there, you are very welcome to Ask Pat.

You say you feel your parents have never been there for you and don’t feel like they are family, you say that your brothers are more like parents to you.

We would be very concerned that you are feeling that way towards your parents.

Your parents have a responsibility to you, to keep you safe, to meet your needs, to offer support when needed, to care for and love you, it sounds like these needs are not being met.

It sounds like you get on very well with your brothers and that is a good thing.

Perhaps you would like to chat a little more about how things are for you. Our phone lines are open 24 hours a day and we are always here to listen and support you and explore with you any options that are available. Childline would never judge you.

Also, you may find some useful information on our website at www.childline.ie under the heading Info and Advice.

We wish you well and thank you for contacting us .
