Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex.  

We know that it can be a difficult thing to reach out and talk about what’s going on for you, but we feel that this can be very helpful for young people, so thank you and well done for taking the first step.   

You have shared with us that your dad hits you, and we are concerned to hear this. We’re truly sorry that you’re experiencing this, and we want to emphasize that it’s not okay for anyone to hurt you. You’re showing great courage by reaching out to Ask Alex. In Ireland, all children have the right to protection and safety, and they should get help if they’re being mistreated in any way. 

You have the right to seek help and support in this situation. We’re wondering if you have another trusted adult that you could speak to about what you’re experiencing. They may be able to help you connect with services that can support you through this ordeal. You have the right to be protected from this physical behaviour.  

If you ever feel unsafe at home or anywhere else, you have the right to call emergency services at  999  or  112.  These calls are free and can be made from any mobile phone or landline. 

Additionally, you have the right to contact Túsla, the Child and Family Agency in Ireland. The social workers at Túsla are there for young people under 18 years old, and their role is to ensure that children and young people are safe at home. You can find your local Túsla office here: www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/local-area-offices/. You might need the support of an adult to reach out to them.
