Mam and Dad are fighting

Your Question

What do I do when my mam and dad are fighting

Answer

Hi there,

Welcome to Ask Alex, thank you for reaching out, we know it is not always easy to reach out for support and you are very brave to do so.

You mention your parents are fighting and you are wondering what you should do. We understand that it can be very upsetting when parents are fighting at home, and it is important to know that it is not your fault.  You have the right to feel happy and safe in your home.

Talking about problems and sharing these problems can really help and it can sometimes feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. Have you ever thought about talking to one or both of your parents to let them know how their fighting is affecting you? Sometimes the people close to us do not realise the effect their behaviour can have on us, but it is important that you know you have a right to be listened to.

If you feel like you can’t speak to your mam or dad, do you think you could speak to someone outside your home, this could be an aunt or uncle, a grandparent, or any trusted adult that you feel comfortable talking to. There are some articles on the Childline website that you might find helpful. Here is the link www.childline.ie/home-and-families/

If you feel you cannot talk to somebody that you know just yet, Childline is here for you. The services are free and available 24/7. You can get in contact through the telephone service on 1800 66 66 66, or by Live Chat that you access through the website www.childline.ie.

Please remember you do not have to go through this alone. Childline is here to listen to and believe you. We hope that you find this helpful. Take care of yourself,
