Answer

Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex,

Thank you for reaching out to us. It seems you would like to know if this website is for children who are being abused at home or in school? Here in Childline we provide support to all children and young people (up to and including the age of 18). Our Childline Listening Service is available 24/7 for children to talk about anything that’s going on in their lives. Nothing is too small or big to talk about. Some children may want to chat about their day or their plans, while others may be experiencing some difficulties in their lives, such as abuse. At Childline we aim to empower and support children and young people at home and in school.

Childline is one of many services which will offer you support if a young person is experiencing abuse. The Childline website has some helpful information explaining what abuse can look like. This article may be helpful, www.childline.ie/what-is-abuse/.  or if you’d like some more information around understanding child abuse, you could check out Tulsa’s website www.tusla.ie/services/child-protection-welfare/definitions-of-child-abuse/.

If you are experiencing abuse, it is important to remember that you have a right to get help and to talk to someone about how you are feeling. Abuse is never ok, and it is never your fault. You have the right to feel safe in your home and at school. You also have the right to be listened to and heard about what you are experiencing. Perhaps you could consider talking to a trusted adult about your situation? This could be a family member, youth worker, doctor or even neighbour.

You also have the right to report abuse to the Gardaí or to Social Workers. If you’re feeling unsafe at any time, you can call the emergency services at 999 or 112. If you would like to contact a social worker, Túsla can provide support. Túsla is the Child and Family Agency of Ireland, and their job is to keep young people safe in their homes. You can find your local Túlsa office here: www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/local-area-offices/ if you would like to get in touch with them.

Your thoughts and feelings matter, and you deserve to be heard. Childline is here to listen when you are ready to talk, you are always welcome to chat with the Childline Team on the phones by dialling 1800 66 66 66 or through our web chat service on www.childline.ie. You can start a chat by clicking on the Orange Tab on the right-hand side of your screen. As mentioned previously, our Childline Listening service is confidential, free and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We can help you to look at your options and decide your next step.

Take care of yourself,

Alex
