Alex's Answer

Is this normal affection

Your Question

My dad keeps touching and slapping my ass and thighs and I don’t know if it’s just normal affection. We don’t really have a relationship and I told him it made me uncomfortable and it made me cry lots I feel gross and disgusting now. I can’t tell anyone cause they’ll think I’m overacting.

Answer

Hi there, thank you for reaching out with your concern.

We’re really sorry to hear about your discomfort regarding your dad’s behaviour. It’s completely understandable to feel uneasy when a family member crosses boundaries like this. Your feelings are valid, and it’s crucial to address them.

Feeling like others might dismiss your concerns can be worrying, but know that you’re not alone. Sometimes, adults in our lives behave inappropriately, and it’s not your fault. You have every right to feel safe and respected in your own home.

While it may be confusing to determine what constitutes normal affection, your discomfort and tears indicate that this behaviour is not appropriate. It’s essential to trust your instincts in situations like these.

Consider reaching out to a trusted adult or professional for support. Talking to someone non-judgmental can provide clarity and help you through this challenging situation. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or helpline, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance.

Childline is also available for you whenever you need support. You can reach out to us through Live Chat at www.childline.ie or call us for free at 1800 66 66 66. We are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year. We will not judge you and we will explore what options are available to you.

Take care of yourself, and please reach out for support soon,
Alex
