I'm so nervous

Your Question

Hey alex! So I’m nervous. On Friday its open Mic night at a kombucha bar, and I’m singing 2 songs. I’ve sung before but then I didn’t know how I sounded. Now I’ve heard myself in other songs. I’m gonna sing Rebel by Anne wilson, and Rise up by andra day. 2 other friends will be singing aswell, like they did last time, but my one friend B is so good. While I really WANT to be that good and I feel like if I have a desire for it, then I should’ve gotten that gift. Why give me a desire if I can’t have it? So yeah. Just a little vent.

Answer

Hey there, thanks for your question!

It sounds like you’ve got a lot on your mind about the upcoming open mic night. It’s completely normal to feel nervous, especially when you’re putting yourself out there in front of others. Singing takes courage, and it’s awesome that you’re stepping up to share your talent!

It’s understandable that hearing yourself sing can make you more self-aware and perhaps even more critical of your own abilities. But remember, everyone has their own unique voice, and it’s okay if yours sounds different from B’s or anyone else’s. You’re still finding your voice and developing as an artist, and that’s a journey that takes time and practice.

Feeling like you’re not as naturally talented as someone else can be tough, but it’s important to remember that talent is just one piece of the puzzle. Hard work, dedication, and passion play a huge role in becoming skilled at anything, including singing. Your desire to improve and your willingness to put yourself out there are signs of your dedication, and that’s something to be proud of!

Just know that you’re never alone in how you feel. It’s ok to vent and share your frustrations.
