Answer

Hi there,

Thank you for contacting the Ask Alex with your question, we’re glad you were able to each out for some support.

From what you’ve said it sounds like you are considering running away and that you have a plan in place, as you say you know where you would go. We’d be concerned to hear that you have this plan as running away could put you in many dangerous and risky situations, especially as you mention your age as something that could be a drawback to your plan. It’s positive that you have enough self-awareness to know that running away at this age, may not be a good decision for you. You also mention that you may consider the idea of suicide as an alternative to running away, this would also be concerning as it seems you are having a hard time in life at the moment and that you are looking for ways to escape this struggle. We would like to support you with this and give you some options that may be of help to you.

If there is something going on in your life, whether it’s at home, or whatever it may be, then you have the right to get help with this if it is causing you to feel these emotions and have these thoughts around putting yourself in danger.

Maybe talking to someone might be a good place to start so that you can talk through everything going on for you. Chatting with a trusted adult in your life or a friend, can often give you a chance to figure out your thoughts and feelings.

Also, Childline are here to support you and listen to what’s on your mind, you can call for free anytime on 1800 66 66 66 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) or chat online via www.childline.ie. We also have a lot of helpful content on our website that might be helpful for you to read through, you can find it by clicking this link: www.childline.ie/running-away/  You can also visit your GP or go to A&E if you feel that your thoughts and feelings of suicide are becoming a threat to your safety.

We hope this answer will give you some ideas on where to get support so that you find a way to stay safe and feel better in yourself.

Take care,

Alex
