Answer

Hi there,

You’re very welcome to Ask Alex and thank you so much for getting in touch with us.

You’re saying that you think you might have ADHD or another disorder but that you’re scared to talk about it to anyone. That seems like it must be difficult for you right now, not being able to talk to the people around you about it. You also mention you think people think you’re lying about how you’re feeling. This must be really tough, and it’s understandable that you would feel scared to talk about it with anyone when you don’t feel like you will be believed.

It would be really important that you have the correct information and resources about different symptoms and conditions, such as ADHD as you’ve mentioned. It would also be important to seek some medical advice to confirm a diagnosis for you, and to make sure you get the correct support if you are diagnosed with a disorder. Maybe this could be something you could talk about with your GP? They would then be able to put you in touch with the relevant support for you. There is also a website that might be helpful for you – www.adhdireland.ie.

You said the people in your life think you’re lying about what’s going on for you right now. Has there been anyone in your life in the past that you have felt comfortable talking to, someone who helped you feel listened to and believed? It could be someone in your family, or maybe a trusted adult outside of your family environment like a teacher or guidance counsellor.

We want you to know that we believe you and hear what you’re saying and want you to know that you have the right to get help and support around how you are feeling at the moment. If you would like to talk to someone anonymous, we are here 24/7 for you here at Childline, either by phone 1800 66 66 66, or through online chat on www.childline.ie. We won’t judge you and we will give you the space to talk about anything you want. We can help you explore what you would like to do, and what options you feel you have.

Thank you for getting in touch with us here, you have been so brave to share what’s going on for you.

Take care,

Alex.
