Answer

Hi there.

Welcome to Ask Alex. Thanks for reaching out.

You asked if it was normal to imagine things that you can’t see. You mentioned that these images can sometimes scare you and that you don’t feel normal.

You are very brave to share with us what’s on your mind. It sounds like this is something that you are worried about and might find difficult to process. That’s completely understandable. Sometimes we can actively imagine things which is a normal part of growing up. Other times, when people imagine things, it can feel out of their control. From what you explained about the type of things you imagine (dark silhouettes and little blurs) and the feeling of being scared, it sounds like these are unexpected. When we imagine things out of the blue like this, it could be what is referred to as an hallucination. This is when we perceive things in our mind but there is no real object/thing causing us to see/hear it. There are many reasons why you might be imagining these things. Sometimes it can be caused by poor sleep, life stresses or when we’re feeling low. We can understand how this can feel scary and confusing. By reaching out and sharing this with us you’ve taken a great first step towards understanding how you feel and what you are experiencing.

It might be good to ask yourself whether this is something that happens to you a lot or just once every now and then. If it is affecting your day-to-day life, it might be a good idea to reach out to your doctor to ask their advice on the topic. There are some websites available that discuss areas of mental health that you may find helpful too such as Jigsaw and Childline.ie.

If you would prefer to talk to us over at Childline, you are very welcome to call us for a chat on 1800 66 66 66. We are here to listen to anything that is on your mind.
