Alex's Answer

I don't believe they love me

Your Question

so, this is mainly about me not feeling loved, my family says they love me, but most of the time I don’t believe it, like yesterday, we were celebrating my brothers birthday party and we had family over, I tried to joke around, make people laugh, and show them what I’m interested in, but all they did was ignore me, give me a side eye, I didn’t really know what to do, I felt like crying and just storming out

Answer

Hi there!

Thanks for contacting us here at Ask Alex to share what is going on for you, that takes a lot of courage. It seems like you had a really tough day yesterday. Family gatherings can bring up a lot of feelings and we want to let you know that it is okay to feel the way you do.

It is important to feel loved and cared for by our family and it sounds like you are doubting their feelings of love for you. Communication is a powerful tool and speaking to your family members about how you are feeling could help as it may help them understand what is going on for you.  You may find this article helpful www.childline.ie/how-to-manage-family-relationships/.

Please remember that you are never alone. If you want to talk about this more, the Childline team are available 24/7. Our free phone service can be called on 1800 66 66 66. You can also chat with us through our webchat service by clicking the purple Messenger circle at www.Childline.ie.

In addition to reaching out to Childline for support, it’s important for teenagers to have a network of trusted adults and friends to turn to during difficult times. Talking to a teacher, school counsellor, coach, or another family member whom you feel comfortable with can provide you with valuable perspective and support.

Friends can also offer empathy and understanding, and sometimes simply venting to someone who listens can be incredibly therapeutic. Building a support network allows you to have multiple avenues for seeking help and reassurance in times of need.

Take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out again if you need us. We’re always here to help,
Alex
