Your Question

I did something I shouldn’t have and now I think I‘ve upset someone. I apologised but I still feel bad. If I knew, I would never have brought it. I should have made sure everyone was comfortable with it, but I didn’t. I stopped when I realised, they weren’t ok with it. How do I stop feeling bad. I will apologise to them in person when I see them but I ruined the entire night for everyone because of my stupid self.

Answer

Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex.

Thank you for trusting us with your thoughts. That is a very brave thing to do.

You mentioned that you did something that you shouldn’t have done, and you think that you may have upset someone. You said that you apologised but you still feel bad. It appears that you are being quite hard on yourself. Everybody makes mistakes.

One of the ways you can approach this is to talk to your friends about how you’re feeling. Would you feel comfortable having a conversation with them around how you are feeling? Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a friend one-to-one rather than in a group. If this seems difficult right now, perhaps discussing it with a trusted adult might help. This could be a parent, caregiver, aunt/uncle, grandparent, older sibling, or teacher.

Remember, you can always phone Childline on 1800 66 66 66 to talk about what is going on for you if you don’t feel ready to talk to someone in your life quite yet. We are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our text service, which can be reached on 50101 and Web Chat service through www.childline.ie, are also available daily. While we will not tell you what to do, we are here to listen to and support you, and to help you to explore the options that are available to you in your life. We are here to help you in a way that suits you.
