How do I tell

Your Question

how do i tell my parents I’m being sexually harassed by my cousin

Answer

Hello there, thanks for your question!

Firstly, we want ot commend you for reaching out. It takes a lot of courage to speak up about something as serious as sexual harassment, especially when it involves a family memory. Please know that you are not alone in this and there are people who care about your well-being.

It’s completely understandable that telling your parents might feel overwhelming. Perhaps you could find a quiet moment to sit down with them and express how important it is for you to talk about something serious. You can start by explaining what’s been happening with your cousin and how it’s being affecting you.

It might help to rehearse what you want to say beforehand, so you feel more prepared. You could also have what you want to say written down; and if you are finding it too difficult to speak the words to your parents, you can show them. Remember, it is ok to feel scared or anxious about this conversation.

Perhaps there is another adult that you would like to confide in first, who could then be with you while you tell your parents. This could be another family member, or a teacher.

Remember, your safety is the priority. If you ever feel unsafe in your cousin’s company, don’t hesitate to contact the Gardaí at 999 or 112.

Additionally, Childline is always here for you. We are open 24/7 to support you and explore your options. You can reach us at 1800 66 66 66 or via Messenger at Childline.ie. Your call or chat is free, confidential and anonymous.

You deserve to be safe and respected. Speaking up is the first step towards that. Know that you are not alone. We can be with you every step of the way.

Look after yourself,

Alex
