Alex's Answer

Feeling unhappy and unwanted

Your Question

I’m 16, and I haven’t felt wanted, special, or like I’ve had anyone to talk to since I was around seven. My mom has told me and made me feel like she doesn’t really care about anything I have going on or my feelings. I haven’t been able to talk about my feelings in a while because my mom mocks me or makes fun of me and says I’m too emotional whenever she hurts my feelings. I really want help, because I haven’t felt happy with myself or like I’ve had anyone to turn to in a very long time.

Hi there,  you are very welcome to Ask Alex, a service for young people to ask anything they need.

We are happy you’ve reached out, it’s a very brave thing to do. You have told us that you don’t feel wanted, and that your mum has told you she doesn’t care about you. She mocks you about what’s going on for you and how you feel. We are sorry to hear this, you deserve to feel valued and respected in your home.

As a young person in Ireland, you have the right to dignity and respect. Do you have a trusted adult you could go to talk about this, maybe a teacher or a grandparent? By sharing with someone what is happening to you, they may be able to support you, as they are familiar with local supports to you.

You have told us that you want help. This is a really brave step to take and you’re not alone in this process. There are lots of places in Ireland which support young people. Jigsaw is a mental health charity which supports young people who may be in a similar situation to you. You can contact them through their website Additionally, your GP can support you with your mental health and accessing services. You have a right to get professional support with your mental health and with your family situation.

You’re not alone on your journey. Childline is here to help whenever you need someone to listen to you, 24 hours a day, 7-days a week. You can contact us by calling 1800 66 66 66 or through our Live Chat at We will give you a safe space to talk or chat or rant. Our services at Childline are anonymous, confidential and we will help you look at which options may be best for you right now.

Remember, you matter and your feelings are valid. We think you are very special.
