Answer

Hey there, thanks for getting in touch.

We hear you, and we understand how overwhelming it can be when everything seems to come with a hefty price tag. It’s tough when you’re juggling responsibilities like minding and feeding yourself, especially at just sixteen. It’s a lot to take on, and it’s completely understandable to feel the weight of financial pressure.

We are concerned to hear that you are providing for yourself at 16 years old. Your parents are responsible to take care of you until you reach 18 years. If they are not in a position to do so, then the responsibility falls to the State. Túsla, the Child and Family agency in Ireland, is the State body you contact for that support which you deserve and have the right to www.tusla.ie/.

You’re not alone in feeling this way. Many teens face similar challenges, and it’s okay to reach out for support. Remember, your well-being is important, and there are resources available to help you get through tough financial times. There are some grants available to families who are experiencing financial difficulties. You can find out more about them here www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social-welfare/families-and-children/payments-to-families-and-children/. You may need the support of an adult you trust to help you avail of any grants your family could be entitled to.

As for the upcoming TY ball, it’s understandable that you want to participate and feel included. While it might feel disheartening not to afford everything you’d like, there are ways to make it work within your budget. You could consider borrowing or swapping items with friends, exploring affordable alternatives, or even reaching out to local charities for assistance. Some charities like  www.svp.ie/ provide financial to to families. You can find your local office on their website and what support they can offer you.

Just know that your worth isn’t defined by material possessions, and there are people who care about your well-being. Hang in there, and remember that brighter days are ahead. If you ever need someone to talk to, know that Childline is just a call or click away, ready to support you every step of the way. You can phone us for free at 1800 66 66 66 or through webchat childline.ie (just click on the purple messenger circle). We  are here 24/7 for you, any reason, any time.
