We completely understand how frustrating it can be when your parents take away your devices. It can feel like they’re invading your space or taking away your connection to the outside world, especially when so much of our social lives and entertainment revolves around technology these days. It’s totally normal to feel upset or even angry about it.

Parents often take away devices because they care about you. They might do it to help you focus on schoolwork, get enough sleep, or simply to ensure you’re not spending too much time online. Sometimes they worry about the content you might be exposed to or the people you might interact with online. It’s not about punishing you, but rather about guiding you and keeping you safe.

That being said, it’s important to communicate with your parents about how you feel. Let them know that you understand their concerns, but also express your own perspective, respectfully. Maybe you can come up with some compromises together, like setting specific times for device use or agreeing on certain rules. There are many articles about how to stay online on the Childline website www.childline.ie/online-safety/. Perhaps you and your parents could go through some of them together? Or maybe you would like to read some of them before you talk to your parents.
