Dad monitors my every online move

Your Question

Am I allowed to have online privacy? LIKE without my dad monitoring my every online move? Sometimes I’m a wondering things like “when will my voice sound like I’m not a 5 year old?” Or other things about puberty, but then I fear he’s monitoring me. Because like I’ve said on here before, he’s deleted my roblox app. I had friends. But no. He decided he’d flush my friends down the freaking toilet. I’m 12 by the way. Am I allowed to have boundaries and rules?

Answer

Hey there! Welcome back to Ask Alex,

You are asking if you can have any online privacy where your dad cannot monitor your every online move.

It’s completely normal to have questions and concerns about your privacy, especially as you go through your teenage years. It’s important to acknowledge that as you grow, you’re developing a sense of individuality and independence. It’s understandable that you might want some space to explore certain aspects of your life without feeling constantly monitored.

It’s a good idea to have an open and honest conversation with your dad about your feelings. Share your thoughts on wanting a bit more privacy while assuring him that you’re responsible and aware of online safety. Communicating openly can help build trust between you and your dad.

Setting boundaries is a crucial part of growing up, and it’s okay to express your need for some rules while still allowing room for personal space. Discussing these boundaries together can create a healthy balance that respects both your need for independence and your dad’s concern for your well-being.
