Can I get emancipated from my father

Your Question

How do I become emancipated from my father only

Answer

Hi there, thank you for reaching out to Ask Alex.

It takes a lot of courage to consider emancipation at such a young age, you must be going through a difficult time to be considering emancipation. It is important to understand that emancipation is a legal process that allows minors to gain independence from both their parents or guardians, not just one parent. In Ireland, the legal age of emancipation is 18.

Before considering emancipation, it’s very important to talk to a trusted adult, such as a teacher, counsellor, or relative, about your situation as there may be other options available. They can help you explore these options and help you to connect with the appropriate resources. Leaving home at a young age can be very challenging, and it’s important to have a support network in place to ensure your safety and well-being.

There are support services available to help you through difficult situations such as emancipation. Túsla, the child and family agency in Ireland, are responsible for making sure every young person in Ireland has a safe place to live. You can find out more about what they can do for you here www.tusla.ie/services/alternative-care/.

Citizen’s Information is an organisation in Ireland which can provide you with free legal advice, www.citizensinformation.ie/en/birth-family-relationships/children-s-rights-and-policy/children-and-rights-in-ireland.

Remember, you don’t have to face any difficult situation alone. Childline is always here for you. We will support you through this or any other challenging time. Our 24 hour support line is 1800 66 66 66 or if you prefer, our Live Chat is available at www.childline.ie.
