Can 16 year olds consent

Your Question

since the age of consent is 17, if two people that are both 16 want and consented to having sex would it be illegal? and would you be allowed to buy condoms at 16 or would a worker deny you buying them?

Answer

Hey there, thanks for your questions!

We’re really glad you reached out with your question. It’s totally normal to have questions about relationships, sex, and your rights, especially as a teenager going through these new experiences.

In Ireland, the legal age for sexual activity is 17. This means that technically, if two people are both 16 and consent to having sex, it could be considered illegal. Consent is incredibly important, but the law is there to protect young people and ensure that everyone is ready for such a big step.

Regarding buying condoms, in Ireland, you can buy condoms at any age. It’s essential to practice safe sex if you do decide to become sexually active, and using condoms is a responsible choice.

Lastly, if you ever feel like you need someone to talk to, whether it’s about relationships, sex, or anything else on your mind, remember that you’re not alone. You can always reach out to the Childline Team. We’re available 24/7 through phone (1800 66 6666) or Live Chat, and we provide non-judgmental, confidential support.

Take care of yourselves, and we wish you well in your relationship,
