Summary

Sometimes, things can feel like a bit too much. School, friends, family, expectations, social media: it can all build up without you even noticing. Maybe you feel a lack of motivation, feel tired all the time, or like you don’t have the energy to deal with anything. This feeling is often called “burnout”.

What is Burnout?

Burnout is not just feeling tired after a long day. It can feel like:

  • Constant tiredness or exhaustion, even after resting.
  • Losing interest in things you would usually enjoy.
  • Even small tasks can feel overwhelming.
  • Persistently feeling low, irritable, or disconnected.
  • You’re putting a lot of pressure on yourself.

Why does it happen?

Burnout can happen if you’ve been pushing yourself for too long, without enough time to rest and recharge. You might feel pressure to keep going, even when your mind and body are asking for a break.

Sometimes, you might not even realise how much you’re dealing with until it all catches up with you.

It’s okay to do nothing.

There is sometimes pressure to be productive, you may feel strange or guilty if you stop. Doing nothing sometimes is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

“Doing nothing” can look like:

  • Lying in bed and resting.
  • Watching a show or movie that you enjoy.
  • Going for a walk.
  • Sitting with your thoughts.
  • Taking a break from social media.
  • Saying no to plans when you need space.

We don’t always need to be doing or achieving something. Rest is not something you have to earn.

You deserve time for you.

It’s okay to step back. It’s okay to take a break. It’s okay if you’re not okay all the time.

Taking time for yourself doesn’t mean you’re falling behind; it means you’re looking after yourself.

If you’re feeling burnt out, talking to someone can help. You don’t have to go through it by yourself.
