Hi there and thanks for contacting Ask Alex. 

You have asked about why your mam is locking herself in her room. 

Firstly, I would like to say how brave you are to reach out for support. I cannot say exactly why mam has locked herself in her room but sometimes when people experience difficulties in their lives, they can remove themselves from situations that they find stressful or overwhelming. People can also find it difficult to engage in their everyday activities like going to work, caring for themselves or others and other daily activities that we all do on a daily basis if they are experiencing their own difficulties  

I wonder also is there anyone else living at home with you like your Dad, siblings, or another adult? If Mam is spending a lot of time in her room, is there another adult in the home that is there for you to keep you safe and ensure all your basic needs are met? Your Mam may also need her own support at this time, but this is not your responsibility and I wonder have you talked to another adult about what has been happening at home and that could possibly support Mam in seeking help if she needs this. This could be Dad, extended family like grandparents or another adult. 

This must also be quite a worrying time for you, and we talked about Mam possibly needing some support, but I wonder what support you have? Talking to someone like a trusted adult, a friend or someone else could be so important and allow you the time and space to explore your worries around Mam and make the burden you are carrying a little lighter.
