Answer

Hello, Welcome to Ask Pat.

Thank you very much for your question.

You are asking, if you were to put forward a complaint about an adult, what would happen? You say you wish to remain anonymous.

We are a little unclear from your question to whom you wish to make the complaint about. We are wondering if this adult is a family member, or perhaps a teacher. No matter who the adult is, no one has the right to mistreat or hurt you in anyway. You have the right to complain if you feel you have been treated badly.

We understand that wanting to make a complaint about someone can be a difficult position to be in, and you have the right to get support around this. Young people have the right to get help from the adults in their lives, people who they feel they can talk to about what is going on for them. Some may feel this trusted adult is a family member, or teacher, a school guidance counsellor or their doctor.

Here is some information and articles that you might find helpful. Túsla is the Child and Family Agency in Ireland. In Túsla, there are social workers whose job it is to make sure that all people under the age of 18 are living in a safe home. You can find your local Túsla office here www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/local-area-offices/If it is a teacher you wish to complain about, you have the right to talk or send a letter to your school principal or to the school’s Board of Management. The Childline website has lots of information too which you may like to look at www.childline.ie/bullying-abuse-safety-and-your-rights/www.childline.ie/your-rights/www.childline.ie/home-and-families/ .

Don’t forget, you can always contact Childline to talk about this or anything else that may be on your mind. You can get in touch by phone on 1800 66 66 66, by text at 50101 and webchat through www.childline.ie. We are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. While we do not tell you what to do here at Childline, we are here to listen to you, support you and help you to explore the options that are available to you in your life, to help you in a way that suits you. All Childline services are free and confidential. It is a safe place for you to talk as we do not trace calls, use caller or IP address IDs.

Take care of yourself,
Pat.
