Your Question

What to do if my parents never listen to me

Answer

Hi there,

You are very welcome to Ask Alex and thank you so much for getting in touch with what is going on for you. It sounds like it must be very frustrating to feel that your parents don’t listen to you and can be really hard to know what to do about this.

We wonder, how long do you feel this has been going on for? Do you feel that there are certain times that it is worse? It may help to try and have a conversation with them about how you are feeling about this, this may look like “I feel upset that you don’t listen to me when…” and try to give a specific example of when you felt this way.

Do you have someone else you can talk to about this? Maybe a supportive friend or another family member like a sibling or aunt or uncle? They may be able to help you address these feeling and also relate to this. We know it can feel overwhelming to have such conversations but it is important that you know you are not alone.

If you are not ready to talk to someone you know just yet, you can always talk to someone here at Childline. At Childline, we are focused on you and what is important to you. You can contact our 24-hour listening service through our free phone service; the number is 1800 66 66 66. Alternatively, you can chat with us through our webchat service by clicking on the purple Messenger circle at www.childline.ie. Your conversations with us are confidential and safe, we do not use caller ID nor IP addresses, so your contact is anonymous.

We are so proud of you for reaching out.

Take care,

Alex
