Answer

Hi there and thank you for contacting Ask Alex

You ask what actually happens when you go to therapy and will you get better.

When you go to therapy, the therapist/counsellor will  begin to build a relationship with you, get to know you so you feel safe and confident in sharing what has brought to therapy. They will explain about confidentiality and what happens if they have any concerns about your safety or wellbeing.

They will also support you in telling them your story and why you are seeking help. They might chat about your childhood, what school is like for you , your relationship with your parents or guardians , friendships and how you feel about yourself and how you are feeling on a day to day basis

You also ask if you will get better. Minding our mental health is an ongoing task and when we are struggling with our mental health, it is important to reach out like you are doing now. In therapy they will equip you with tools to help you in minding your mental health and improve your mental wellbeing.

Taking the first step in reaching out is always the most difficult but you have taken the first step right here. If ever you need to talk about it and you don’t know who to go to, know Childline is here for you. We will listen and support you whenever you need us too. You can call us on 1800 66 66 66 or use the Live Chat function on our website www.childline.ie. Childline is open 24-hours a day, 7-days a week. There will always be somebody here to chat with you, at whatever time you need us. You do not have to be alone at this time.

Take care of yourself, well done for reaching out to us.
