Wooden scrabble letters forming the words "Be the kind one".

Kindness is a highly underrated quality – if everyone was just a little kinder to each other, there might be a lot less injustice in the world.

In today’s society, there is a tendency to focus on ourselves more than the people around us so it’s important to remember to show kindness in our everyday lives.

It’s a lot easier than you think and more often than not, doesn’t cost a thing!

Here are a few simple, free ways to spread kindness today:

Invite someone who’s alone to join you for lunch

There’s no kinder act than inclusion. If you see someone who’s struggling or is alone a lot, ask them if they’d like to join you or your group of friends for lunch. It could mean more to them than you realise.

Water plants

Being kind doesn’t just apply to other humans – it extends to other living things too. By watering the plants in your home, you’re ensuring their survival and their continued benefits in your home, which can include reduced stress, better air quality and increased productivity.

Recycle

Following on that theme, you can be kinder to the planet by learning what you can and can’t recycle and encouraging those around you to do the same.

Help out at home without being asked

Doing what you’re asked to do is an act of obedience but going above and beyond to help out is an act of kindness. It’s your home too so go that extra mile when you can.

Give someone a hug

Covid_19 showed us just how important touch is in our lives. When it’s safe to do so, reach out to someone who’s having a hard day and give them a hug. Sometimes that can be more reassuring than any words you could say.

Share your umbrella

Getting caught in an unexpected downpour is such a nuisance! If you have room, share your umbrella with someone until you can move towards a place of shelter.

Smile at someone

Smiling is the best kind of infectious! Not only does it make you happy (it increases our endorphin levels aka. the happy hormone), it will also give the recipient of your smile a boost of happiness that will impact the rest of their day!

Celebrate a friend’s good news

If things aren’t going as well as you’d like them to in your life, it’s easy to feel resentful or jealous of something good happening for a friend. Remember that one day, you’ll be the one with the good news so be kind and acknowledge their good fortune. After all, nothing in life is permanent so it’s important to celebrate the little things as often as you can.

Play with your pet

No one will love you quite like your pet so make sure to show them some kindness when you can. Take them for a walk, rub their belly, play fetch or simply talk to them while chilling out on the couch.

Say thank you

In our modern, high-tech society, it’s easy to take things for granted. We live in an instant-gratification world where everything we want is merely a click away. That’s why it’s great to pay attention to the people around us and to appreciate them when they help us in any way.
