Answer

Hi there, welcome to Ask Alex!

First, we want tot hank you for reaching out and sharing what you’re going through. It takes a lot of courage to ask for help, and we’re here to support you.

Running away from home is a big decision, especially at 15. We understand you might feel overwhelmed or unhappy with your current situation, and it’s important to talk about why you’re considering leaving. Sometimes family conflicts, feeling misunderstood, or even safety concerns can make staying at home feel impossible.

In Ireland, the legal age to leave home is 16, but only with your parents’ consent. If you leave home before then, you might be considered homeless or at risk, and Túsla, the Child and Family Agency, may need to get involved to ensure your safety. This means they might try to help you and your family find a solution together.

If talking to your parents feels too difficult right now, is there another trusted family member or adult you could speak with? They might help you express how you’re feeling and support you in finding a solution. Sometimes staying with another family member for a short period can give everyone the space they need to work things out.

Running away can be dangerous and often leaves young people vulnerable to many risks. It’s important to think about your safety and well-being. If you ever feel unsafe at home, it’s crucial to contact emergency services by dialling 999 or 112.
