Parents divorcing

Your Question

what happens when my parents go to court for a divorce?

Hi there, thanks for getting in touch with Ask Alex!

Sounds like your parents are going to court for a divorce, and you’re wondering what happens. It’s great that you have reached out to us.

When a couple gets a divorce, this means they are no longer married. There are lots of different reasons why this might happen and it is important to know that their divorce or separation is not your fault. You might feel a lot of different things when a divorce or separation happens. You might feel angry, sad, confused or even something different. All of these feelings are ok to have.

It can be difficult to know what changes will happen in your life as a result of the divorce, and it’s normal to have many questions. Your parents will work out some of the changes that will happen. If they can’t agree, then a mediator, solicitor, or social worker, might help them to come up with a plan that will work.

It is important that you talk about how you feel and what you would like to happen. It can take time to get used to changes, and you have the right to support and to be listened to. Is there an adult in your life whom you trust to talk with about the divorce? It could be your parent/s, an aunt, teacher or anyone else you can think of. There are some useful articles on the Childline website which may be helpful for you Also, there is an organisation who help and support young people whose parents are separating or divorcing.
