Opening up to my friend

Your Question

How do I open up to my one of my friends about wanting to kms?

Hi there,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us here at Ask Alex. We are so glad that you did. Suicide is not the only option, and you do not need to be alone with these feelings.
Suicidal thoughts can happen to anyone for any number of reasons. Thoughts about wanting to kill yourself are just thoughts; you do not have to act on them. The most important thing to do when you are having these thoughts is to talk to someone. You have made a great start by contacting us here at Ask Alex, and we can see that you want to share these thoughts and feelings with a friend. It is great that you recognise the importance of this.
You are asking how to open up to your friend. You may find it easier to send a text message first to tell your friend that you have something important you want to talk to them about and hope that you can have a chance to have a chat alone soon. This will communicate the importance of the conversation and that you would like it to be distraction-free. It is okay to tell your friend how you’re feeling about having the conversation; you could start with “I am feeling really anxious/scared/nervous about saying this, so it might take me a minute to find the words.”
You can also contact Pieta House at, which offers a free crisis helpline for people with suicidal thoughts on 1800 247 247 or text HELP to 51444.
Childline is available 24/7 too, if you want to talk further about things. You can phone our freephone number on 1800 66 66 66 or chat with us through our webchat service by clicking on the purple Messenger circle at If you feel suicidal and need help straight away, please call 999 or 112.
Stay safe and know that you are not alone,
