Answer

Hi there and thank you for contacting Ask Alex.

Firstly can we say how brave you are for reaching out. You talk about your mother and stepdad fighting and how this has been affecting you, making you “paralyzed in fear”.

This must be such a difficult, and scary time for you. It is your right to feel safe in your home  and to be protected from harm.  Your parents do not have the right to harm you in anyway, physically, emotionally, or sexually. It is your parents responsibility to care for you, protect you, and listen to you.

Know that any concerns around abuse to young people under 18 years of age, should be reported to Túsla or to the Gardaí. Tulsa is the Child and Family Agency in Ireland. The social workers job within Túlsa, is to keep children and young people safe at home. You can find your local Túlsa office here www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/local-area-offices/, should you like to get in touch with them or find out more information.

If you feel unsafe at home, or feel you are in danger, you have the right to call the emergency services at  999  or  112.

Do you have someone in your life that you can reach out to, to talk about what has been going on for you. This person could be another family member, friend, teacher, sports coach, who could support and help you? This article from the Childline website may be helpful for you www.childline.ie/what-to-do-if-you-live-with-parents-who-are-constantly-fighting/.

During difficult times,  practicing self care can help us cope with how we are feeling. It  can be something as simple as going for a walk or doing something we enjoy and it can allow you the time and space away from what is going on at home. You may like to practice the breathing and other exercises here:  www.childline.ie/video-breathing-and-relaxation-exercises-to-help-you-release-your-worries/

If ever you need to talk about what’s going on for you, and you don’t know where to go, know Childline is here for you. We will listen and support you whenever you need us. You can call us at 1800 66 66 66 or through Live Chat on our website www.childline.ie. These services never close, so there is always someone here to talk to or chat with, 24/7.

Look after yourself, and please reach out soon,
