Alex's Answer

My friend is suicidal

Your Question

My friend is suicidal and sometimes hurts himself and the friendship is affecting my mental health

Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch with ask Alex with what is going on for you. It sounds like you are going through a really tough time with your friend. It can be really hard to try and be there for a friend who is self harming and suicidal, and it understandably impacts your mental health.

Both you and your friend have the right to support with your mental health. Have you spoken to anyone about this? It might help to talk to an adult you can trust such as a parent, family member or coach. They can help you access the support you and your friend need.

Suicide is a challenging topic to talk about in general and when you hear someone saying that they might kill themselves, it can be incredibly upsetting. . There are also organisations that your friend can contact for support, one being Pieta House There is also support there for people who know someone who is suicidal or self-harming, which you may find helpful for yourself.

Remember ISPCC Childline is always on the other end of the phone, you can call for free on 1800 66 66 66 or chat online at Childline is a listening service, where we won’t tell you what to do however we will chat about your situation and help you come to the best solution for you.

Well done on being a caring friend. Know that you don’t have to go through this on your own, support is available for you both,
