My friend is getting another dog

Your Question

My friend and her family already have 2 cats and used to have lots more. I have 1 dog. She is getting another dog but I don’t think she needs another one. I think I’m a bad friend because instead of feeling happy for her, I feel sad. What should I do?

Answer

Hey there, and welcome to Ask Alex!

It’s totally okay to feel the way you do, and it’s brave of you to reach out and share your feelings. You’re not alone in having mixed emotions sometimes, and that’s perfectly normal.

Firstly, it’s important to remember that your feelings are valid. It’s okay to feel sad or worried when something changes in your friend’s life, especially if it involves more responsibilities, like getting another pet. It doesn’t make you a bad friend; it makes you a caring and thoughtful one.

If you’re concerned about your friend’s decision to get another dog, you can consider having an open and honest conversation with her. Share your feelings and concerns with her, and maybe you’ll both gain a better understanding of each other’s perspectives.

We have a fantastic support Team at Childline that you can reach out to. We are available 24/7 to listen, support, and explore your feelings with you. There are 2 ways to get in touch with us, by web chat (at childline.ie, just click on the orange Live Chat tab) and by phone (1800 66 66 66) which is a freephone number

Remember, you’re never alone in this, and the Childline Team is here whenever you’re ready to talk. Thanks for reaching out, and take care of yourself!
