Alex's Answer

My best friend got really annoyed with me

Your Question

I’m in 1st year and I have this friend who I’ve known since primary and she is in my base class. We have been best friends for years but today she got really annoyed at me for no reason saying that I am really annoying and that she hates that she has to put up with me every day. She has never mentioned anything like that before and I feel like I want to cry ever since. What should I do?

Answer

Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex,

Thanks for reaching out with your question.  We understand that it can be difficult to talk about what’s going on so it is great that you are taking this first step.

You say that your best friend got really annoyed with you, she said you were really annoying and she hates that she has to put up with you everyday which has made you feel really upset, is that right?

We can understand why you would feel like crying, it sounds like a really difficult situation for you, especially as you say that you have been best friends for years.

You say that your friend has never mentioned anything before about feeling like this, so do you think that there could have been anything else causing her stress?  Sometimes when we get very stressed, we can take it out on our family or friends.  It’s not a very good way to deal with stress, but it can happen.

How would you feel about trying to talk to your friend, to let her know how her behaviour today hurt you?  You could even try to write a letter/message to say how you are feeling, what the friendship means to you, and ways that you could move forward?

Have you been able to speak to anyone about what happened? It can help to talk to others when we are going through tough times.  Maybe you could speak to a parent, another family member or youth worker that you trust. There are lots of articles on the Childline website about friendships, that you might like to read over, which may be helpful for you: www.childline.ie/friends/

You could also contact us here at Childline.  We are a 24/7 free and confidential listening service.  You can contact us on phone (1800 66 66 66) or by webchat through our website www.childline.ie, (just click  on the orange Live Chat tab and send a ‘hello’), we would love to chat to you a bit more about this.

Take care, we hope to hear from you soon,

Alex
