Answer

Hi there and thank you for contacting Ask Alex.

We would be very concerned about you speaking of your Mum beating you. It is your right to be safe and be protected from harm.  Your parents do not have the right to harm you in anyway, physically , emotionally or sexually. It is your parents responsibility to care for you, protect you and listen to you.

You have a right to get help and support and to talk to someone about how you feel. You have the right to be listened to and heard about what you are experiencing. Sometimes talking about what we are going through with a trusted adult can help us to make decisions. Do you think you have a trusted adult you could speak to about what’s going on for you? This could be another family member, teacher, youth worker or neighbour.

Remember, young people have the right to report any concerns of abuse to Social Workers or to the Gardaí. Tulsa is the Child and Family Agency in Ireland. The social workers within Tulsa are there for young people under the age of 18 years, and their job is to make sure children and young people are safe at home. You can find your local Tulsa office here www.tusla.ie/get-in-touch/local-area-offices/ if you would like to get in touch with them or get information. If you feel unsafe and are in danger at home or anywhere else, you  have the right to call the emergency services at  999  or  112.

We would also be worried to hear that you are vaping. If you are not aware of the dangers of vaping, you may find this article helpful www.hse.ie/eng/about/who/tobaccocontrol/resources/vaping-information-for-parents.

If you would like to talk to us some more, without judgment, you can give us a call at 1800 66 66 66 or if you prefer to webchat, you can start a Live Chat on our website childline.ie. We are open 24-hours every day, so there is always someone here to chat with you. We can go through some of your options with you.

Take care of yourself, reach out for support soon,
