I’ve just lost my friend

Answer

Hi there and welcome to Ask Alex.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand that it can be a difficult thing to do.

You mentioned that you just lost your friend. We are sorry to hear that. It is completely normal to miss your friend and it shows you care and value friendships. Sometimes when a friendship ends, we can stay feeling hurt for a while. It can take a lot of time to get over losing important people in our lives.

It can be useful to talk to others about this. Would you have a trusted adult in your life that you could discuss it with at all? This can be a family member like a parent, an aunt, uncle, grandparent, or maybe there is someone outside of the family like a teacher, neighbour, or sports coach. It is important that you get and feel supported.

We are wondering if your friend has died or whether you have parted ways? Either way, it is good for you to be able to talk about the relationship you had with your friend, with somebody. It is normal to feel sad and even cry about your loss, and it is understandable that you may feel like this just now. You may also feel angry about your loss, and this is a normal feeling to have too. You have the right to talk about your thoughts and feelings, and to be supported at this difficult time for you.

There is an article on the Childline website about experiencing loss and/or bereavement www.childline.ie/experiencing-a-death-or-loss/. It also gives websites for 3 other organisations you may find helpful, who deal with bereavement and loss.

Remember, you do not have to be alone and go through this experience on your own. You can always phone Childline on 1800 66 66 66 to talk about what is going on for you if you don’t feel ready to talk to someone in your life quite yet. We are here 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our web chat service through www.childline.ie is also available every day, just click on the orange Live Chat button on the right-hand side of the screen. We are here to listen to and support you, and we can help you explore some options that are available to you. The phone calls and webchats are free and confidential. We are here to help you in a way that suits you.

Take care, we hope to hear from you soon.
