It scares me so much

Your Question

Why do I think about rape all the time. It scares me so much, but its always on my mind. I keep researching about it and reading inappropriate stories about it as well. I am female.

Hi there, you are very welcome to Ask Alex.

Well done for reaching out to us about this. We understand that this topic can be difficult to talk about, so we really appreciate your bravery.

You mentioned that you have been thinking about rape a lot and how you find it a scary thing. It is understandable that you would find the idea of rape scary. It is a serious crime, and it is a very traumatic experience for anyone to have to go through.

It sounds like you have a question about why you are thinking about this so often and you have concerns around this. We are not sure in what context you are thinking about rape, but just to let you know that sometimes people have repeated intrusive obsessive thoughts about rape that are very much incompatible with their values.  This can often lead to an experience of fear that they are bad or wrong for having these thoughts. It can result in overwhelming feelings of guilt and shame. However, people who suffer from these types of intrusive thoughts are very unlikely to act on their thoughts.

You have the right to get support with this. Thoughts about rape all the time can be difficult to cope with. It could be really helpful to talk to a trusted adult. This adult could be a mental health professional, a doctor, a parent, or a teacher. It would be important that this adult would be someone that would not judge you. Your GP could be helpful as they can refer you to other support services who could help too.

It is important to remember that you are not alone in this. If you don’t feel comfortable yet to talk to someone in your life about this, you might find it useful to talk to a stranger first about this. Jigsaw may be able to offer you support and help with this. You can find their contact details on at

You would also be very welcome to contact us here in Childline.  You can phone us on 1800 66 66 66 or through our Live Chat on  Childline services are free and confidential, and are available 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Well done for taking the first step in getting support. Please know we are here for you anytime you need to talk.
