Answer

Hi there,

You’re welcome to ask Pat.

You have asked us is putting a substance like mustard on a child’s tongue abuse? This is a good question! Mustard is a form of spice with a pungent smell. Children are often exposed to small amounts of flavours gradually, which can help develop their taste buds. If a child had mustard on their tongue and they were allergic, this would very likely cause a burning sensation on their tongue so any signs of irritation or swelling would be good to look out for. For more advice on this, this article from the HSE website may be of use to you: https://www2.hse.ie/wellbeing/child-health/food-allergies-and-children.html

On the other hand, putting mustard on a child’s tongue as a form of punishment could be seen as abuse. This article on the Childline website may help explain what abuse is and what to do if you or someone you know is being abused: https://www.childline.ie/what-is-abuse/
