You have asked if burning yourself with candle wax is considered self-harming. Thank you for reaching out, it takes a lot of bravery.  

We talk about self-harm when someone intentionally injures or damages their body, usually as a way of coping with difficult or overwhelming emotions. It can be a way to release feelings of distress or anger. If you are burning yourself with candle wax to intentionally hurt yourself or if you know someone who is, we are indeed talking about self-harm.  

It is a good idea to recognize what are the feelings and emotions that lead you -or someone close to you- to self-harm, and why. You have the right to be listened to and be heard. Have you spoken to an adult in your life about this?  

It is important in terms of mental well-being to get help and support and to talk about why you feel you might want to harm yourself. Even though this can be a coping mechanism right now it is not the only coping mechanism there is, and there are certain organisations which can offer help and support in finding different ways to manage these feelings and emotions in a safer way. One such organisation is www.jigsaw.ie. Their website may help you understand what is going on for you. You can look through their information and they may offer you direction regarding what supports are available to you. www.pieta.ie is another organisation you can turn to as they help people who are self-harming.
