When people talk about contraception or birth control, they are talking of ways to protect themselves while having sex or to keep from becoming pregnant. The most effective way to keep from becoming pregnant or getting an infection is to practice abstinence or not have sex at all. It is the only way to make sure that you will not get pregnant or catch a STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection).

For couples who do choose to have sex they often want to protect themselves from catching an infection or becoming pregnant. There are a lot of different methods to choose from if you are sexually active and some methods are better than others.

We’re not trained here in Childline to talk about medical information or to tell you what to do. It might help to talk to an adult you trust about birth control and contraception. It’s up to you to make the right decision for you.  A doctor will be able to tell you more about all of your options.
