Why is bullying harmful?

Bullying affects everyone in different ways.  Some feelings associated with being bullied:
  • Guilty like it is your fault
  • Unsafe and afraid
  • Hopeless and stuck, like you can’t get out of the situation
  • Ashamed that this is happening to you
  • Alone, like there is no one to help you
  • Stressed out wondering what to do
  • Confused about why this is happening to you
  • Feeling depressed and rejected by your friends and other groups of people
Some effects of bullying include:
  • Stress
  • Reduced ability to concentrate
  • Lack of motivation or energy
  • Poor or deteriorating school work
  • Anxiety about going to school
  • Loss of confidence and self esteem
  • Lack of appetite / comfort eating
  • Alcohol, drug or substance abuse
  • Aggressive behaviour
  • Depression
  • Problems with sleeping: nightmares, bedwetting, sweats
  • Stomach and bowel disorders
  • Panic attacks
  • Nervous breakdown
  • Attempted suicide
