Cultural characteristics

Ethnicity refers to the cultural characteristics which connect a particular group or groups of people to one another. The people in the group may be from the same country, have the same history or have the same cultural identity. There are many different types of cultural groups in Ireland.

Identifying culture

Culture can be seen in people's clothes, writing, religion, music and cooking. Another way of describing a culture is through the traditions and beliefs which a group practice in their daily lives. A culture is passed on from one generation to the next.

Right to celebrate

Your culture may bring new and exciting ideas to other cultures. Sometimes, some people may not understand your culture. Whatever ethnic group you belong to, however, you have a right to be safe and happy in your daily life. You have the right to celebrate all that makes you different and the same as other cultures.

Support available

There are many different organisations there to make sure that everyone, no matter where they are from, is given the same chances and experiences as everyone else.
