Answer
Hi there,
Thank you for getting in touch with ask Alex, we understand how difficult it can be to talk about what is going on for you so well done for reaching out.
It sounds like you are scared of being with your dad because of how he is treating you and you are wondering if getting angry at you and hurting you is abuse.
The first thing we would like you to know is that you have the right to feel safe, secure and happy, especially in your own home, we are concerned that you don’t feel safe in your home. There can be arguments in families and people can get angry but no one has a right to hurt you or make you feel scared to be in your own home. It is not ok for your dad to hurt you in any way.
You asked if this is abuse and there are some articles on the Childline website that may help with your question www.childline.ie/is-this-abuse/; www.childline.ie/getting-help/; www.childline.ie/home-and-families/
You mentioned that you have not told anyone anything yet – it can be difficult to deal with things all by yourself and a good first step would be talk to a trusted adult about what is happening. Would you have someone in your life that you would be comfortable sharing this with like your mum, an aunt or uncle or maybe a counsellor? You have the right to get help and support with how you are feeling and what’s happening with your dad.
We understand how hard it can be to tell someone what’s going on for you so if you are not sure who you can turn to, please remember that we are always here to listen at Childline, 24/7, 365 days a year, if you would like to chat. We won’t judge you or tell you what to do, we are here to listen and to help you figure things out. You can call us on 1800 66 66 66 or we have a chat service on our website www.childline.ie. You can start a chat at any time by clicking on the Orange Tab on the right-hand side of your screen.
Thanks for sharing your question, hope this helps and please remember that you don’t have to handle this on your own.
Take care of yourself,
Alex.
